Africa AHEAD pioneered the Community Health Club (CHC) Model of development – a practical strategy for enabling people to improve their home hygiene and prevent most common diseases.
What is a Community Health Club?
Community Health Clubs (CHCs) are voluntary community based organisations (CBOs) dedicated to promoting health by preventing common diseases in their area through safe hygiene.
Who joins a Community Health Club?
Men and women of all ages, income and educational levels.
Why use the CHC Model of development?
The CHC Approach has been recognised internationally as one of the most cost-effective methods for achieving high levels of hygiene behaviour change by enabling communities to take responsibility for their own health.

The Community Health Club Model
A.H.E.A.D means Applied Health Education and Development.
Our methodology is a long term, holistic process of community development in four phases:
Putting heads and hands together to change knowledge and behaviors: Community Health Clubs in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Understanding behaviour and choice in context: accessing local knowledge to enhance energy access and sanitation interventions”
What happens in a health club?
A regular weekly meeting of 1-2 hours
What do CHC Members learn?
How to prevent early death of infants
How long is the CHC training?
The Classic CHC which is proven to be most effective has a six month training.
Members achieve exceptionally high levels of hygiene
There are about 50 recommended practices that are expected of CHC Members which ensure safe water, food, hygiene and sanitation.
Self supply: no subsidy
We offer NO material incentives, and makes for self reliance and they provide their own sanitation and hygiene facilities.
High completion rates of training
We can easily expect at least 60 but often up to 95% completion rate.
This can be attributed to a monitoring system with a membership card which is signed each week, until all 20 sessions completed. Those who complete get a certificate which is the only incentive.
Who runs the Community Health Club?
Every CHC elects a Chairperson, Secretary and an Executive Committee who run the club.
Who Trains the Trainers?
The Core Trainers are properly trained by Africa AHEAD in situ or in one of the two hubs: Rwanda and Harare.
The training can then cascade as needed either for the NGO or for the country in a national programme
Are CHC facilitators paid?
Community facilitators are usually volunteers. However, they may also be government village health workers or project officers.
